Service Information

Weekdays services from Walkden have changed little in recent years but as from May 2010 we are delighted to be able to report that an hourly Sunday service now operates from Walkden to Wigan and Manchester.

Monday to Friday services to Manchester start at around 6.30am and - after a couple of peak hours with slightly more frequent trains - settle into a regular pattern of two trains per hour in each direction.

In the evenings services drop to one train per hour in each direction, with the last train out of Manchester leaving sometime after 11pm (currently 11.20pm).

The Sunday service is currently limited to 9 trains per day in each direction, but we hope this may be enhanced in future if the trial service running from May 2010 to May 2011 is successful.

There is no longer a summer-only additional through service to Blackpool from Walkden.

Through Destinations

All westbound services from Walkden run to Wigan Wallgate and during the day continue to either Kirkby (where passengers can change for connections to Liverpool) or to Southport via Burscough. In the evening, all westbound trains terminate at Wigan.

All trains east from Walkden run to Salford Crescent, Salford Central and Manchester Victoria where the majority terminate. There are occasional services that continue forward to Rochdale or Todmorden; these are useful where they coincide with travel plans but are generally not frequent enough to be particularly useful.
